Moon bags are the sculptural style trend to try this summer

Gone are the days of boxy totes.

In its place (and on Instagram), the hobo bag has crept in — but it looks nothing like it did in the 2000s. And it has taken on a different moniker: the moon bag, owing to its crescent shape and circular armhole.

Today’s version of the hobo bag is more refined, making it suitable for both work and play. It’s not slouchy like the ones the Olsen twins used to carry, either. Instead, the new silhouette is structured and sculptural, something that the twins, now minimalists, would appreciate.

In fact, they do. Under their label, The Row, the pair have designed their own version of the trendy bag. So has Bottega Veneta. But you don’t have to break the bank to try on the trend that has gotten the approval of Kendall Jenner, Gigi Hadid and countless other street style stars.

Here’s the bag that started it all. Staud’s signature “Moon” tote — as seen on Kendall Jenner and Bella Hadid — is made of leather and contrast stitching that highlights its distinctive shape. This new style features croc-effect leather, which is guaranteed to make the bag stand out even more.

Nanushka isn’t just great for vegan leather clothing; the Budapest label boasts a selection of handbags that are just as covetable. This “Anja” tote is the bag you’ll want to take out to parties, thanks to its shimmering, ruched satin fabric.

No points for guessing what By Far’s latest statement bag is named after, but you’ll get plenty of style points for wearing it. Unlike the other options, this ‘Lune’ bag is a slim offering which we figure can fit only a handful of your essentials. On the plus side, it’s lightweight and comes with a long chain handle too, so you can carry it with convenience.

All right, so A.W.A.K.E. Mode’s ‘Lucy’ handbag resembles an egg more than a moon, but it’s no less a circular statement piece. And even more so because it’s made with padded faux leather that is soft to the touch. Here’s an accessory you won’t be able to keep your hands off of.

Another cult favourite in this peculiar category of bags is Coperni’s “Swipe” tote. The name actually refers to the swipe button on an iPhone, which would fit nicely in the oblong bag along with your wallet and makeup kit. And no worries about your stuff falling out; the Swipe’s top handle features a zip that runs all along it.

Carolina Santo Domingo specialises in sculptural bags, like this “Ostra” tote. It stands out with its asymmetric shape and the unconventional placement of its handle which, by the way, is fully adjustable. More artsy than playful, this piece would add a nice touch to your outfit for business lunches.

Homegrown designer Ling Wu is known for her modern and functional bags, and the “Stevie” hobo is no exception. It plays on the moon-shaped bag trend while adding a little slouchiness, allowing for more room in the bag. This one is made with exotic leather sourced from Indonesia in a versatile nude shade that will be fairly easy to style.
