Everyone knows Onitsuka Tiger for its classic Mexico 66 sneakers, but footwear is no longer all that the Japanese brand is known for anymore. With the opening of its largest Singaporean boutique in Ngee Ann City, Onitsuka Tiger makes a splashy statement that it is a fashion lifestyle brand, and you’ll recognise them as such.
Parked at the basement of Ngee Ann City, this is the fifth outlet the label has established in Singapore. The 165sqm of space has been designed to evoke emblems associated with Onitsuka Tiger, such as the Sumi mortar elements that bear a natural pattern akin to tiger stripes, as well as a kitschy chandelier fitted with plush toys of the brand’s namesake feline.
The usual Onitsuka Tiger wares are ever-present throughout the store, but this expansive retail destination will also exclusively stock the Nippon Made collection, focused on shoes that are laboriously made by hand. This nod to traditional Japanese craftsmanship involves assembling the shoe, and washing the leather in hot water, following which each shoe is squeeze-dried to give a vintage, worn look. No two pieces are alike.
Trendy athleisure-style apparel and accessories with subtly Japanese design touches complete the space, giving shoppers more Onitsuka Tiger options than ever before. The next time you’re in Ngee Ann City, you know where to go.
