Love a good deal? Then say hello to your new favourite shopping destination in town: OnTheList’s flagship showroom.

It’s located at Change Alley Mall (formerly Chevron House) in Raffles Place, and it’s where OnTheList will now hold its weekly flash sales on all things luxury. We’re talking fashion, beauty, wine and even homeware products, all offered at generously discounted prices.

What’s the catch? There isn’t, really. OnTheList launched in 2016 with a simple idea: to partner with luxury brands and bring their old, unsold luxury merchandise to a new group of customers.

The start-up calls its a “sustainable solution”; it’s extending the shelf life of these products, while preventing them from being irresponsibly disposed of. (Some luxury brands, including Burberry, Chanel and Louis Vuitton, have been known to burn their past-season stocks in order maintain the scarcity of their goods and keep them from being stolen.)

While some may frown upon their goods being discounted, plenty of brands have been won over by OnTheList’s unique approach to flash sales, which are only offered to its members. By making them exclusive instead of a public free-for-all, the platform preserves the prestige of their partners. No wonder that it now counts over 500 of them, including Stella McCartney, Salvatore Ferragamo and Armani.

Their products have since been sold at sales across Asia, including cities like Hong Kong (where OnTheList was founded), Shanghai and Beijing. In Singapore, the platform has 30,000 members — a 20 per cent increase from when it launched here last year.

But the more significant figures are how much waste OnTheList has recycled in the process: around 2.7 tons of carton boxes and 90kg of polybags. These are materials used in packaging that, upon disposal, contributes to environmental pollution. With its eco-friendly efforts, OnTheList seems to be getting right what most of the retail industry hasn’t for years.

It’s also a feat to be opening a new retail venue at a time when more brick-and-mortar stores are shuttering. But OnTheList’s steady growth, even during a pandemic-afflicted economy, points to the future of retail, at least in Asia. Shopping only the latest in luxury, it seems, is so last season.

In fashion, retail is already being disrupted by the rise of the secondhand industry. More people are buying — and selling — vintage designer goods, and brands like Gucci are even teaming up with luxury resale platforms to promote the sustainable shopping model.

OnTheList is just another part of that shift. Despite all the talk of how (physical) retail is dying, you’ll be sure to find a queue at its new flagship showroom, which is hosting a grand opening sale this week until 31 October. Up for grabs? Diane von Furstenberg’s colourful womenswear, Monica Vinader’s very wearable, demi-fine jewellery pieces, and the fragrances of Maison 21G, all at slashed prices. Sometimes, good things come with small price tags.
