Karl Lagerfeld’s code of aesthetics may have shaped Fendi for over 50 years in womenswear but he has lent his touch to the men’s collection for the first time in the brand’s Fall/Winter 2019-2020 show.

The collection channelled the brand’s Italian heritage into a contemporary marriage of suiting and sportswear – injecting a certain sense of ease in its tailoring. Lagerfeld’s drawing board includes rigorous cuts of tailored shoulders and a palette of sharp blacks with a metallic sheen.

Menswear staples included sartorial suits, oversized trench coats, Harrington jackets and cardigans, with plenty of fur, leather and shearling accents. The sleek pieces exuded, dare we say, a suitably monied look from the way they gleam on the runway.

Half-and-half pieces also scored points with a unique mix of colours and materials. These complemented the relaxed trousers with contrasting pocket panels, as well as the notch lapels with accenting sharp blazers — retaining a luxury vibe without sacrificing style. But this time around, Lagerfeld brought a rather subtle ensemble in very neutral shades. According to Silvia Venturini Fendi, the moment is ripe to bring sartorial formality back, always with a Fendi twist.

The futuristic FF logo also made an appearance with calligraphic treatments, found on accessories, gold chains and chevalier rings. Shoes echoed Lagerfeld’s signature (you got it right) with Cuban heels on cordovan and patent shoes walking down the runway.

The Fall/Winter 2019 collection also highlighted the brand’s collaboration with Porter– a series of ultralight men’s Baguette and Peekaboo bags in shades of red, black and blue. It reiterated the fact that bags weren’t an afterthought but arguably a key element of the collection. Here are our favourite picks from the Fendi Men’s Fall/Winter 2019 show.
