For those of us who dread the chill of winter, the good news is that oversize coats in a wide range of materials and colours are right on-trend this season. From the stupendously long to the sumptuously voluminous, here is a roundup of some of the must-shop pieces you might want to run out and buy before the cold really sets in.

Kings of the catwalk

At the 2019-2020 autumn-winter shows, held in the four fashion capitals in February and March of this year, oversize coats were kings of the catwalk. Taking pride of place in collections from many of the major houses, was a wide variety of oversize, ultra-long, belted, puff-sleeved and bold-shouldered pieces. Oversize coats are not only great for wrapping up against the cold, but they also can be used to hide most of an outfit, leaving virtually nothing visible except for the shoes.

Among the brands which succeeded in sparking a sensation with supersize creations earlier this year: Lacoste presented an imposing two-tone coat with XXL buttons, Chanel combined an oversize look with the timeless elegance of houndstooth and Genny presented an immaculate white, extra-long, side-slit version. For their part, Off-White and Dries Van Noten focused on oversize puffy down coats with checkerboard and floral motifs, while Stella McCartney offered a supersize trench coat. However, without a doubt, the most spectacular piece showed up in the collection by Mary Katrantzou, which featured a supersize landscape-print coat.

… Already adopted by fashion icons

Proving yet again how close the runway is to the street, renowned models and influencers have succumbed to the trend for oversize outerwear. From New York and Los Angeles to Paris, stars have massively adopted voluminous looks, taking advantage of a wide variety of styles to reflect their ever-changing moods.

Izabel Goulart, who shows that an oversize look is no barrier to mobility, takes an ultra-cocooning black overcoat matched with a minimalist outfit composed of a crop top and cycling shorts for a ride on her skateboard.

Noted leader of the fashion vanguard Karlie Kloss shows off an urban outfit teamed with an imposing beige overcoat with extra-long extra-wide sleeves, combining oversize and casual chic.

Meanwhile, Olivia Palermo focuses on colour and length with a long, bright pink, sleeveless coat, which she wears with an equally long, deep purple dress.
