Given the perpetual humidity our equatorial isle is famed for, it’s absolutely understandable that our wardrobes are teeming with warm-weather staples. Crisp, breathable shirts? Mandatory. Breezy, light dresses? Check. Off-shoulder tops for the weekend? Sure thing.

The downside to having an excuse to wear summery garb at any point of time in a year, is we take it for granted. We regard these options as the no-biggie everyday get-up, thoughtlessly slipping on strappy tops and giving out “meh”s as we pass by another one of their kind in shop windows.

Enter Rebecca Vallance. Cracking the code on summertime dressing that blends style and ease, the Australian designer is out to give you a run for your money with her eponymous label’s frothy white frills and ruffled frocks. Just one year after Vallance’s launch in 2011, British luxury department store Harvey Nichols started stocking Vallance’s crepe gowns and plissé-lace dresses. And a few years down the road, a cluster of ‘It’ girl fans inevitably forged with names including Karlie Kloss, Behati Prinsloo, Joan Smalls, Sofia Vergara and Vanessa Hudgens.

As the temperature rises, Net-a-Porter has tapped on Rebecca Vallance’s balmy alacrity for a high summer capsule collection that’s part of the e-tailer’s vacation edit, Jet-a-Porter. Curated with the constant traveller in mind, Vallance spun her romantic edge into six pieces of chic staples that’ll sate any style-savvy jet-setter’s needs.

Before clicking up a storm and hoarding Vallance’s Jet-a-Porter range , read our exclusive Net-a-Porter interview to get to know the designer who’s elevating summer dressing from Down Under.

Lifestyle Asia (LSA): Can you tell us what inspired you to start your own label, and how it came into being?

Rebecca Vallance (RV): I’ve been working in fashion from a really young age and it’s always been my passion. Having previously worked as a fashion publicist for designer brands for many years, I was constantly inspired by the beautiful garments that surrounded me. Then when I was living in London in 2011, there was an opportunity to start my own label — which I jumped at.

LSA: What makes Rebecca Vallance’s summer dressing special and different?

RV: We have quite a unique DNA — the brand has a polished aesthetic. However, we like to juxtapose the structured silhouettes with a more undone sense of style, resulting in quite a modern look.

LSA: What’s your design process like, and where do you draw inspiration from?

RV: Every season is different. It depends on what I am feeling inspired by or moved by each season. I find travel really inspires me, because I get to experience new cultures.

LSA: What do you envision the quintessential Rebecca Vallance woman to be like?

RV: She’s refined, she has class, she’s confident and strong.

LSA: What’s the story behind your Net-a-Porter capsule collection?

RV: The Amalfi coast is where I often find creative inspiration for my collections. The scenery, the weather, the food, the fashion and the scent – it is a really magical place for me. The Net-a-Porter capsule was created with this location in mind, so the Amalfi coast was at the heart of the design. The pieces included in the Jet-a-Porter capsule give a taste of the Rebecca Vallance brand and what I imagine a stylish jet-setter would pack for any number of fabulous occasions.

LSA: Has the collaboration with Net-a-Porter impacted your label in any way?

RV: Yes, definitely. Being a part of the Net-a-Porter stable has given the brand incredible international awareness. It’s been great to see such a hunger for our designs on a global scale; we can’t seem to stock enough without the styles selling out.

LSA: What do you hope to achieve with your label?

RV: My aim has always been to design clothes that make women feel confident, sexy, sophisticated and the best possible version of themselves.

LSA: Where do you see the label to be in the next five years?

RV: Rebecca Vallance has always been an international label from day one. Five years from now I would like to see our own international retail footprint up and running, opening stores in London, New York and L.A.
