With the transition into spring (elsewhere, at least), it’s goodbye boots, and hello again, open-toed shoes. On the Spring/Summer ’17 runways, one particular breed of open-toed shoes snatched mass attention — skinny ankle-strap heels.

They might not be entirely novel, but this season attempted to reinvent the ankle strap by making them thin enough to cut cheese. Found on stilettos, pumps, wedges and sculptural heels, and resuscitated in many variations, skinny ankle-strap heels are one to watch when you’re gearing up to reinvent your spring wardrobe.

Here are our top eight picks, straight off the catwalk.

Jason Wu strapped models into so-skinny-it’s-almost-painful stilettos with ribbon ties in a variety of colours, from staple black, to rich burgundy, and this delightful neon-and-nude combo that is as versatile as its duller counterparts.

The sensible pump and lace-up flat collide in Givenchy’s new heel. A satin body meets patent leather ankle-straps and an open back, styled with socks for added whimsy. The chartreuse colour also made for an interesting choice, giving the shoe a neo-vintage effect.

Logos are here to stay again, and Yves Saint Laurent makes it point of celebration by working the house’s logo into the heel of this pump. We love the subtlety.

Sculptural heels were an FW’16 favourite, but Sportmax carried it into SS’17 with masterful detail, from the perforated upper, the knots around the midsection, to the hourglass heel. A modish colour scheme of red, white and black keeps the quirk factor strong too.

Make like a 80s businesswoman and don some square-toed heels. Balenciaga kept the archetypal chunky heel, but slimmed out the straps to make the shoe sleeker.

Florals for spring aren’t groundbreaking, so level up by strapping yourself into a pair of heels decorated with leaves. For a moody approach to edenic, spring vibes, try these Dries Van Noten sandals.

Bottega Veneta presents a non-gauche take on Dorothy’s ruby slippers by making them wedge heels with quilted leather detail.

Rodarte’s SS’17 was greatly inspired by Janis Joplin, evinced by these leather patchwork beauties. To add to the effect, the thin strap adds just the right amount of balance to the graphic heel.
