Fanny packs, really? Really. Apparently, the hottest trend bandwagon to hop on is “gorpcore”, and its serving a major fanny pack comeback. Monikered by The Cut barely a fortnight ago, the newly minted fashion term refers to dressing like you spend a good deal of your time glamping (yes, another fresh phrase and it’s short for glam camping).

And it’s giving you license to reach into the deepest part of your wardrobe where those granddad puffer vests you said you wouldn’t be caught dead in, are stashed.

Gorpcore wouldn’t have existed without normcore, the forerunning fashion movement identified by its embrace of bland, suburban anti-fashion attire that circulated circa 2014. Now with gorpcore, the suburban pack are going on a mountain hike. Ringleaders of the style include rapper A$AP Rocky, who sat front row at a Calvin Klein show in the brand’s puffer jacket slinging a Balenciaga bum bag; and Drake, a former normcore icon who prefers to perform in his Stone Island windbreakers.

“Much of it is rather defiantly ugly,” explained coiner Jason Chen in his gorpcore-dissecting essay. “Practical, element-braving fleeces, ponchos, parkas, and windbreakers from no-nonsense brands like Patagonia, the North Face, Teva, Columbia and Birkenstock worn with painter pants, Vans, Hawaiian shirts and Dickies.”

We beg to differ. As horrendous as it sounds, there’s still a silver lining to the gorpcore wave. Kendall Jenner, for instance, made a case for gorpcore chic as she sported a glamping-proper Eckhaus Latta turtleneck and oversized mom jeans belted with Chanel’s leather fanny pack.

With Kendall Jenner and the street style set’s stamp of approval, gorpcore is warrantied to be the ubiquitous go-to look for fashion weeks to come. From statement puffers to hooded jumpers, here are 5 more tasteful ways to incorporate the trend without looking like you just survived a ghastly camp weekend.

By applying the off-the-shoulder trick, the performance-enduring puffer jacket can be easily spun into a chic gorpcore staple. Model Irene Kim‘s Paris Fashion Week ensemble is a foolproof example to refer to.

Street style star Yoyo Cao wrapped, then knotted her Loéil checked scarf around the neck à la camp girl snugly sitting by the bonfire.

Suspending A-Cold-Wall*‘s rendition of a fanny pack over her shoulder, style savant Aleali May‘s normcore t-shirt-jogger combo was instantly transformed to street-chic gorpcore.

Thanks to gorpcore, hoodies get a lifespan extension of extra seasons. Japanese DJ Mademoiselle Yulia elevated hers by throwing a utilitarian jacket into the mix.

Here’s gorpcore, but in an eye-popping spin. Street style icon-turned-designer Natalie Joos opted for Ienki Ienki‘s belted powder pink puffer jacket over her namesake label‘s striped sweater.
