A look at sustainable French label Veja’s collaboration with Rick Owens

Veja, the french shoe brand that has long been associated with sustainability and a whole lot of cool has just announced their biggest collaboration to date. Enter American designer Rick Owens whose progressive vision ties up the two brands perfectly.

Some 45 percent of the collection’s production is made of organic materials and the brand was especially careful to limit the different steps in the production of new pairs, as each new procedure adds to the overall impact on the environment.

To make a pair of the new V-Knit for instance, Veja uses recycled plastic from bottles and organic leather from Brazil. The iconic “V” stamped on the side gives the shoe its identity, while the overall silhouette sports a 3-D knit upper. The model comes in three colour ways: black, dust and butter.

“This collaboration is about endorsing Veja’s values and aligning ourselves with practices that we think are the future”, says the Owens.

French label Veja has built a name in the fashion industry. The brand is known for aiming for true sustainability and elegance, without sacrificing style or comfort. Since 2005, the company has tried to stay as environment-friendly as possible.

“Since launching the Veja project, we’ve been working our way back up the leather production chain and focusing on two major ways of improving it: traceability and chemical transparency. We know where it comes from and what’s in it,” reads the ‘Leather’ section on their website. “To sum it up 1 VEJA model out of 4 is 100 percent vegan. Out of the 81 models included in the 2018 collection, 20 do not contain any animal products,” an infographic specifies.

The Veja x Rick Owens model is available starting now on Veja’s website for €250 (approximately S$378).
