Polarising is what Virgil Abloh is. The polymath who rose to prominence with his millennial-friendly label Off-White is no stranger to the orchestration of hype. Abloh with his street cred-bestowing Midas touch knows what appeals to his pool of young consumers, yet aggravates the rest with his reference aggregating. Likewise when Louis Vuitton announced Abloh’s takeover as artistic director of its menswear sector. The industry was torn in two. Some deemed the appointment a beacon of change: Abloh will be the first black figure to hold the reins to the world’s biggest luxury fashion house, deciding on its creative path without any standard traditional training. Some were wary of the cheapening of the brand, “[turning] Vuitton into a skate shop.”
Tonight, Abloh will show his debut collection for Louis Vuitton at the Palais Royal. Teasing bits and pieces via Instagram’s brand new IGTV feature (a long-form vertical video platform that’s said to signal Youtube’s demise), Louis Vuitton documented his hands-on process in developing his inaugural show, from the designing of a new curlicue-typed clothing label to the styling of a thigh-wrapping mini monogram bag. An Instagram post revealed basketball high-top sneakers, first worn on the feet of A$AP Rocky. Everything else has been kept under wraps, but one thing’s for sure: Everyone’s counting down to the show. Tune in here and be the first to witness the much-awaited reveal.
The Louis Vuitton men’s Spring 2019 show starts at 8:30pm Singapore time on 21 June.
