How to wear: Checked unisex shirt

When it comes to an investment piece, most would start by suggesting “a crisp white shirt”, “a little black dress” or “a comfortable, timeless t-shirt“. True enough, these garments are a definite, unarguable fact that they are investment pieces per se. But when it comes to a unisex investment item, is there anything else other than the restricted boundaries of a white shirt?

That’s when an epiphany strikes: “How about a (not so regular) checked shirt, decorated with quirky details?”

After sourcing through the Internet and almost every e-commerce website (think Net-a-Porter, Luisaviaroma, Matchesfashion et al.), we inevitably landed on the pages of  Gucci. Just under several clicks, we found the one  — the investment piece. This Alessandro Michele designed, blue and white checked shirt, with a touch of Texan-influence in burgundy and embroidered appliqués is the key piece that we have been looking for.

You might question its value for being a unisex investment piece, so here are six ways (three for the girls and three for the guys) to prove our point. It may be from the men’s section, but the girls will probably rock it better.

Slip and Slide

Wearing your slip dress over your t-shirt is very fashion-worthy this season, but you can amp up your style game by replacing the t-shirt with a checked shirt instead. If you do not want your shirt to overshadow your femininity, keep your other garments within soft hues. Think pink, red and nude; they’ll do the trick.

Get the look: Gucci denim checked Duke shirt (throughout), US$1,990 (S$2,835), The Row cream silk slip-gown, US$2,131 (S$3,036), Balenciaga pink striped silk-twill scarf, US$295 (S$420), Sophie Hulme multi-coloured panel shoulder bag, US$537 (S$765), Miu Miu red patent lace up mid-heel pumps, US$865 (S$1,232).

Street meets Sports

On days when you’re feeling really casual (or lazy), dress your shirt down with a pseudo track pants. Channel sports luxe with a pair of intentionally worn-out sneakers, but conceal your “laziness” with a statement bag (think sequins).

Get the look: Fendi vermillion red wool and silk-blend wide leg pants, US$1,412 (S$2,011), Saint Laurent glittered acetate Wayfarers, US$328 (S$467), Fendi embellished micro Baguette shoulder bag, US$3,013 (S$4,293), Golden Goose baby blue distressed suede sneakers, US$328 (S$467).

Glam Girl

For a red carpet worthy event, pull out your extravagant maxi skirt and pair your checked shirt with it. Accessorise yourself with your fanciest accoutrements; think luxe yet dainty jewellery, sparkly clutches and quirky heels.

Get the look: Reem Acra black silk crepe maxi skirt, US$2,264 (S$3,226), Tiffany & Co 18k rose gold pearl necklace, US$1,450 (S$2,066), Jennifer Fisher silver-plated dangling earrings, US$444 (S$633), Jimmy Choo marble pink glittered acrylic clutch, US$2,465 (S$3,512), Malone Souliers Montana cutout leather pumps, US$852 (S$1,214).

Casual Corduroy

Moving on to the guys: corduroy, like bright colours, might be avoided by many because it isn’t as easily comprehensible as a suit-pants or denim jeans. Take the risk and dress it down with a navy bomber jacket and some sneakers.

Get the look: Dries Van Noten reversible navy bomber jacket, £663 (S$1,197), Beams Plus slim-fit camel corduroy trousers, £108 (S$196), Anderson’s leather trimmed woven belt, £75 (S$135), Givenchy blue leather sneakers, £364 (S$656).

Journey on a Jet

Jet-setters, listen up. If you’re heading off for a holiday, you can look stylish without compromising comfort by wearing a sleek, tailored trousers. Do remember to bring along a hand-carry suitcase and pack your jackets in – we’re thinking of shearling ones this season – so you can pull them out and keep yourself warm instantaneously when you arrive.

Get the look: Calvin Klein navy silk-seersucker trousers, £464 (S$837), Patek Philippe Grand Complications in rose gold and brown leather strap, POA, Globe-Trotter 21″ black leather trimmed trolley case, £976 (S$1,762), Ermenegildo Zegna brown leather loafers, £410 (S$740).

Biker Boy

Bad boys, evoke your ’70s rock ‘n’ roll/Mick Jagger style with a classic black leather jacket. Don’t just stop there; carry on with a leather -mix-denim jeans and a pair of black boots to seal the holistic look.

Get the look: Rick Owens full grained leather jacket, £1,422 (S$2,567), Neil Barrett slim-fit leather stretch denim jeans, £365 (S$659), Saint Laurent black leather Jodhpur boots, £742 (S$1,340).
