The four-leaf clover has long been regarded as a symbol of good fortune. It is also a prominent motif favoured by French jeweller Van Cleef & Arpels, which started incorporating the lucky charm in its designs as early as 1968.
Named the Alhambra collection, this range comprised long necklaces adorned with delicate clover-shaped details. It became popular in Hollywood and among royalty, with notable personalities such as Princess Grace of Monaco liking the collection so much that she owned at least three Alhambra necklaces decked out in tortoiseshell, coral and malachite.
Fifty years on, Van Cleef & Arpels marks its iconic line’s Golden Jubilee by launching several new Alhambra designs spanning necklaces, earrings and bracelets, and fashioned with materials such as grey mother-of-pearl, black onyx, lapis lazuli and rock crystals.
Highlights include the Vintage Alhambra long necklace, which features 20 alternating motifs of four-leaf clovers crafted in grey mother-of-pearl and diamond-studded pink gold. A matching pair of Magic Alhambra earrings and a five-motif bracelet are available too.
The Vintage Alhambra necklace and matching bracelet also come in an alternative combination of black onyx with diamond-encrusted white gold. These rockstar-worthy pieces are equal parts classy and edgy, and will easily complement any ensemble.
If you’re more inclined towards yellow gold, Van Cleef & Arpels has also rolled out a 20-motif Vintage Alhambra necklace and five-motif bracelet that pair the luxurious 18k metal with deep blue lapis lazuli. Similar to the brand’s other Alhambra designs, this creation showcases alternating clover shapes festooned with diamond-studded yellow gold and lustrous lapis lazuli.
For those seeking a lighter, dreamier aesthetic, the collection also features a yellow gold Vintage Alhambra necklace and bracelet that’s bedecked with transparent rock crystals throughout.
Like their predecessors in the Alhambra collection, the motifs on all of the new designs are fringed with tiny golden beads. Some of the clovers are also set with a slightly larger golden bead at their centre for visual interest.
Adding to the celebrations for its Alhambra collection’s 50th anniversary, Van Cleef & Arpels also roped in creative duo Burcu Sankur and Geoffrey Godet to produce a series of whimsical 3D animations showcasing the clover-inspired jewels. Here’s one of the videos.
