Breitling revives the limited edition Superocean Heritage ’57 in support of healthcare workers

In the midst of a pandemic as urgent and widespread as COVID-19, it’s comforting to see how industries big and small have pitched in to help.

Of the many brands that have chipped in — whether by raising funds or by providing knowledge and comfort to people at home —Breitling stood out by launching a special edition watch that was not only aimed at raising funds, but also at projecting hope during these dark times. The 250-example limited edition in April was such a big success that the Swiss manufacturer has just announced plans to continue supporting frontline healthcare workers with a second version.

If you struggled to get your wrists into one the first time round, the good news is that the Breitling Superocean Heritage ’57 Limited Edition II will be made in a larger quantity of 1,000 units instead. Like its predecessor, this one will garner just as much attention with the same rainbow markers and hands. Instead of a black dial however, Breitling sets this prismatic scene over an equally contrasting  dark blue dial.

The vintage-inspired timepiece — which takes design cues from the ‘50s and ‘60s — is part of the Superocean Heritage ’57 Capsule Collection that was launched earlier this year as an endearing throwback. The 42mm diver’s watch here is outfitted with a steel case and a ceramic bezel insert and houses the chronometer-certified Calibre 10. Despite being a serious workhorse both in and out of the water, this limited edition piece manages to inject a little fun and a whole lot of character into an otherwise monotonous genre.

In the spirit of goodwill, Breitling will also donate an additional CHF1,000 (S$1,465) for each of the first 100 watches sold online. The firm is expected to raise a total of US$500,000 (S$711,400) via this initiative, which will be split equally amongst six organisations in affected countries. One of these organisations is Direct Relief, an aid organisation in the US that’s working to ensure healthcare workers and the people most at risk in this pandemic are given meaningful support.

Other beneficiaries include Fondation de France, Humanitas in Italy, and NHS Charities Together in the UK. One of these 1,000 watches will also be auctioned off in June, which besides the watch will also see the winning bid get the opportunity to have a digital live chat with Kelly Slater — a member of Breitling’s Surfer Squad and one of the best surfers in the world today.

If you fancy yourself a new watch while doing a bit of good, the Breitling Superocean Heritage ’57 Limited Edition II will score you big points in both the style and philanthropic department this year.
