Gucci’s debut in high watchmaking is inspired by its fashion iconography

It only took a century, but Gucci is ready to wow the world with a high watchmaking collection.

The high fashion brand recently announced the debut of its high watchmaking collection – just in time for Watches & Wonders – which will consist of four core lines for now: Gucci 25H, G-Timeless, Grip, and high jewellery watches.

Gucci certainly isn’t new to producing watch collections. In fact, it was the first luxury fashion brand to debut fashion watches in 1972. Every piece was Swiss made, a testament to the brand’s appreciation of a good quality timepiece.

The Gucci 25H might sound unusual, but the number is actually one that bears good luck to creative director Alessandro Michele. It uses a GG727.25 calibre, which also has numerological references: 7 for a sense of completeness, 2 for balance and cooperation, and 5 for curiosity and freedom. The timepieces in this line are sleek with an ultra-slim case and are gender neutral in design. The mechanical watch model comes in steel and pavé-set variations and two tourbillon models in platinum and yellow gold.

Moving on to the G-Timeless, we see the model in five iterations: Dancing Bees, Automatic, Pavé, and the Moonphase. The Dancing Bees is reminiscent of the iconic bee motif seen in many Gucci pieces. On the timepiece, the bees appear on the watch face — there’s also a tourbillon edition. The same bees appear in the Automatic as time markers on jewelled hardstone dials and precious skin straps. The G-Timeless Moonphase is a work of art depicting the galaxies, while the G-Timeless Pavé is fully set with diamonds.

The Gucci Grip is perhaps a design you’re already familiar with. It’s now given the high watchmaking glow up with a mechanical Jump Hour movement, precious materials like baguette-cut diamonds, and more. Most compelling are the pieces in the Gucci High Jewellery watch collection: Dionysus, Lion Head, and Gucci Play. These are inspired by the fashion house’s iconic design motifs — the Dionysus, for example, has the same tiger-head design that you would find on the bags.

The Gucci high watchmaking collection is available by appointment at the brand’s dedicated fine watch and jewellery boutique at Place Vendôme in Paris.
