2020 has pretty much been a downer year, but for keen watchers of horology, it might just be starting to look up in a small way.

Florentine luxury watchmaker Panerai has just unveiled its pop-up at Ion Orchard, theming it after its history of producing wrist-worn diving instruments. Far from a stuffy experience though, the Italian brand has gone for the fantastical, immersing guests in an underwater realm featuring a leviathan octopus measuring seven metres and grazing well into the shopping mall’s second story.

Elsewhere, expect an underwater nautical theme with images of sharks and submarines, as glass cubes showcasing its many timepieces are scattered throughout.

“Our mission is to build a tailor-made universe around the concept, where the essence of the brand is embodied,” says Alvaro Maggini, the first Creative Director in the history of the Maison. “The sea has always been our natural habitat.”

The pop-up will also mark the 70th anniversary of the Panerai Luminor — an occasion that the brand is celebrating by releasing the Luminor Marina Carbotech — 44mm. This reinterpretation of the iconic Luminor Marina sees a major aesthetic change as it’s the first time Carbotech, a composite material based on carbon fibre and noted for its matte black appearance, is combined with the brand’s iconic sandwich dial.

The Panerai Ion Orchard Singapore Pop-Up Store runs till 29 September 2020 and is located at Ion Orchard, Level 1 Atrium, Singapore 238801, 6636 9313. (All images courtesy of Panerai).
