Once a backwater of South Bali with just a small village and daily market, Jimbaran Bay has since evolved into a world-class destination that’s home to several five-star beach resorts. One of these is Belmond Jimbaran Puri Bali, a stunning resort located in a wide sheltered bay renowned for its calm, azure waters.
The resort’s history goes back to the mid-1980s, when a local family purchased the beachfront land and developed nine simple cottages. Now, the Belmond-owned property boasts 64 cottages and villas, three restaurants, a beautiful infinity pool, and other facilities you’d expect to find in a luxury beach resort.
Located just 20 minutes from Ngurah Rai International Airport, yet far removed from the roaring sounds of planes overhead, Belmond Jimbaran Puri is nestled in a prime spot in Jimbaran Bay. Here, you get to soak in the island’s culture, marvel at nature’s wonders, and experience Bali’s vibrant nightlife scene — before retreating into your own private sanctuary at the end of each day.
We stayed in the one-bedroom deluxe pool villa, a luxurious, spacious room with a large king-sized bed perfect for two. Set amidst lush gardens and lotus ponds, the villa has everything you need for a relaxing getaway. The architecture sees cool marble floors and teak furnishings grace the spacious living area, beautifully complemented by traditional Balinese art on the walls.
The villa is complete with exquisite en-suite facilities, such as a black-stone tub with indoor railhead showers, as well as a high-tech entertainment system consisting of a widescreen LCD TV, DVD player and an iPod dock. Additionally, each villa is equipped with a private terrace and sunken pool, perfect for unwinding after exploring Bali’s padi fields and majestic temples.
Alternatively, you can choose to book a two-bedroom garden view pool duplex cottage, which spans two floors with a master bedroom on the ground floor, connected via a staircase to the twin-bedroom above. The cottage also features spacious bathrooms with sunken terrazzo baths.
The property boasts three dining establishments, each with a different concept. Nelayan Restaurant, located right on the white sands of Jimbaran, is a perfect venue for a romantic dinner while marvelling at Bali’s spectacular sunsets. The restaurant’s menu boasts an extensive range of freshly caught fish and delicious Mediterranean-inspired cuisine, masterfully combining Western techniques with Indonesian spices.
Try its signature dishes, such as the baby snapper fillet and the Bali yellowfin tuna, which are incorporated with local ingredients.
One of the hotel’s more scenic dining establishments is Tunjung Restaurant, which overlooks lush lily ponds and sweeping shores. Specialising in authentic Indonesian cuisine, this restaurant serves a buffet breakfast every morning, as well as an à la carte menu of dishes such as beef rendang and crispy duck.
For refreshing tipples, kick back and relax at Puri Bar on the beach. Heralded as one of the most picturesque bars in Bali, the bar serves oriental-style cocktails containing Arak, which is a clear spirit made of rice and is the traditional alcohol of Bali. Must-try creations are the Jimbaran Blue (made up of arak Bali, blue curacao, pineapple juice and coconut cream) and Arak Colada — the bar’s rendition of the traditional piña colada, made up of arak Bali, coconut liqueur, pineapple and coconut cream.
There are no gym facilities on the property. Not that you need it, as nature is your playground here. The resort has activities such as mountain bike riding, boogie boarding, canoeing, surfing and kayaking. All you need to do make the arrangements at the concierge and energise yourself with breakfast before heading out into the mountains or coasts of Bali for a great time. Alternatively, take a dip in the resort’s freshwater, infinity-edged swimming pool, which is flanked by cascading water fountains.
On days when you’d prefer to just take it slow, swing by The Beach Spa. Boasting four open-air bales overlooking the sea as well as a double whirlpool bath terrace, this is truly heaven on earth. Indulge in one of the spa’s full range of treatments which utilises traditional Balinese and Indian Ayurvedic techniques.
We ended our last day in Bali with a sunset cruise on Sea Angel, the property’s boat which is available for charter for up to six people, and comes with a two-man crew. It was a truly memorable and unique experience which we’d definitely recommend for anyone looking to experience Bali from a different point of view.
If you’re hoping to see more of Bali beyond its buzzing nightlife and touristy spots, the Belmond Jimbaran Puri Bali is the place to be. The resort is a green oasis with nature right at its doorstep, so you can get that much-needed break to rest and recharge in a tranquil setting.
